If we talk about Europe, if we talk about Latin America, if we talk about Africa, the Middle East, even China, I have some idea what's going on the society. But I have no idea what's up with India. What's going on there? Who's there, doing what? I have, and have had for maybe a year, a strong hunch that there's a lot of potential in the peasants and working class of India. But I don't know.
Any ideas? Anyone with any knowledge here?

India is a complete minefield - I have lived there and still don't understand a lot about the movement!
On the plus side there can be very strong trade unionist voices, such as the taxis driv'ers union in Kolkata, yet the two communist parties (Communist Party of India and Communist Party of India - Marxist) are either bureaucratic Stalinists or getting into bed with big business.
India desperately needs a mass worker's party, yet in such a massive country it will take time and effort.

In India, the Maoists are currently waging a guerilla war against the government and have been doing so for some time.

After the collapse of the Soviet Bloc India's former "Non-aligned" stance in world affairs in relation to the imperial powers of the time was disrupted and began drifting towards American capitalism, neo-liberalism, etc. Many American companies have outsourced their manufacturing factories and IT operations to India, destroying much local business and with an increasing rate of impoverishment among the people. And as drosera said, there's plenty of Maoist resistance in the outskirts of the country. That's my basic understanding of what's going on.

guerilla war against the government
...or against the workers they kill with their 'revolutionary' tactics of blowing up trains?
