Just thought i'd set up a section for events in the North East Of England. Also, i was wondering if any users are from the north east too.

On Tuesday 26th February, the SWP are officially launching the Sunderland branch of SWP at The Royalty on Chester Road, near the main university campus. (not sure on time yet)

Every Wednesday at 7.30, there is a different meeting at the Salsa Club Newcastle, near Carling Academy too. Every week being on a different topic, tomorow night it will be talking about Cuba.

Cool

As we're starting to build some sort of branch in Sunderland again, we are now doing weekly stalls outside the library on the city campus of the university on a Thursday from abour midday for around 2-3 hourse (depending on the weather)

Also, every tuesday at 4pm, in the library, there will be an open meeting, aimed as students on different political topics. The next one will be about Sharia law and multiculturalism

Also, there is to be a Public meeting of the Communist Party of Britain on Wed. 20th Feb. starting at 7.30pm. So if you would like to come along, I'm sure you would be more than welcome

There were a FEW Ex members of the SWP there including myself, Andy and Keith and if you can remember you were invited by me to attend the Public Meeting.

I didn't know the SWP was still around in the North East.
I used to go to the meetings in Boro till around 1987 after getting into the SWP via the Redskins back in about 1984/85. I did used to post on the SWP Yahoo group awhile back but I think there's only about 30 members on there.

well, i never said there was anything wrong with it, but, he was being very secretive about it and didnt tell anybody that he had left the SWP. I dont know the reasons or anything and its entirely his choice what he does, so ill leave it there.

Yes you did invite me and thanks but i couldnt make it as there was another meeting in Gateshead about trade unions in Latin America, which i felt was more important for me to go to.

I agree totally that we are all on the left and fighting for the same goal and we should have a united front.

cheers for making this pinned

The SWP Sunderland launch was fairly successful, think there was 17 of us altogether and there was lots of debate (which had to be cut short due to time restraints) and there may be a couple of new members as a result of it. Lots more discussion went on in the bar after the meeting too.

Next week there is a planned Stop The War meeting in Sunderland to help build up the World Against War demonstration in March. Details to come soon.

Lost Cause? Consequences of the War on Terror
With the media gaze currently on the US elections in 2008, Paul Rogers, Global Security expert and Professor of Peace Studies, Bradford University will explore how volatile international security is. His latest book Why We are Losing the War on Terror sets out his view that the war on terror has failed as well as analysing it alongside the related conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. In our discussion he will also look at the implications of US and UK foreign policy and the likely impact of the US elections and ask whether it is time to rethink western attitudes to global security.

Paul Rogers is Professor of Peace Studies at the University of Bradford, and Global Security Consultant to Oxford Research Group. Professor Rogers has worked in the field of international security, arms control and political violence for over 30 years. He lectures at universities and defence colleges in several countries and has written 20 books, including 'Losing Control: Global Security in the Early 21st Century' (Pluto Press, 2000; 2nd Edition, 2002) and most recently 'A War Too Far: Iraq, Iran and the New American Century' (Pluto Press, 2006). He writes monthly briefings analysing the international security situation for the Oxford Research Group website and since October 2001 has written a series of ORG Briefing Papers on international security and the 'war on terror', including 'Endless War: The Global War on Terror and the New Bush Administration' (March 2005) and 'Iran: Consequences of a War' (February 2006). Paul is also a regular commentator on global security issues in both the national and international media, and is openDemocracy’s International Security Editor
Paul's latest columns are available below:All events are part of the Cafe Culture series and take place fortnightly on First and Third Mondays at 7pm at World Headquarters, Curtis Mayfield House, Carliol Square, Newcastle, NE1 6UF (near Monument metro and a short walk from Haymarket bus station).

I used to be a member of the swp in Bristol before moving back up north. I left because I beleived that building Respect was a huge mistake, poplar front rather than united front. Since leaving SWP I have been looking for some organisation to join but with no luck. Couldn't beleive that the left is missing in the north east. I live in Hartlepool. My political beleifs is that without a revolutionary party then the working class will never take power. Workers councils rather than parliament, also need to work in unions in a united front way pursuing a marxist programme. So if anyone interested in meeting up for discussion?

North East Working Class Bookfair
Durham Clayport Library, Millennium Place, Durham City.
Saturday November 22nd 2008, 12-4pm

You are invited to visit the 2nd Ever North East Working Class Bookfair, sponsored by North East area NUM.

There are no bookshops in the North East for working class people to view our history and contemporary movements’ literature, and so building on the success of the first bookfair last year, we are launching the 2nd Working Class Bookfair (no ‘business studies’ books allowed!).

Cunningly placed after the ‘Big Meeting’ in the run up to Christmas in Durham city. This event will be popular as a place to; meet like minds, get up to date books and magazines, learn of future movement events and it is at a time suitable for the purchase of presents. There will also be a social event, talks, and/or entertainment booked for the evening, to be confirmed.

The range of local groups invited includes; political groups, Trade Unions, community groups, campaign groups, and history societies.

At 2.30pm there will be a book launch. Dave Douglass will be introducing and talking about his new book, and Archie Potts will be talking about his latest work too - information below;

Geordies — Wa Mental, is the first volume in the
autobiographical trilogy (Stardust and Coaldust) of David
John Douglass, a coalminer for 40 years. It tells the
fascinating story of the radicalisation of a working-class
Geordie ‘baby-boomer’ during the first twenty years of his
life and provides a unique and valuable insight into the
political and cultural movements of the 1960s.

ZILLIACUS
A Life For Peace and Socialism

by Archie Potts

A biography of Konni Zilliacus, based on original research, drawing on interviews and private sources. It reveals his links with Arthur Henderson, Hugh Dalton and Philip Noel-Baker; relates his life in the Far East and Vladivostock in the era of the Russian Revolution; his work for the League of Nations against fascism in the 1930s; and as a prolific pamphleteer under the pseudonym 'Vigilantes'.
He was elected as a Labour MP for Gateshead in 1945, but expelled by Labour for opposing Ernest Bevin's Cold War politics. Readmitted, he was elected as a Manchester Labour MP in 1955. He met Stalin, Tito, Krushchev and Castro.

'I strongly recommend this book as a contribution to the understanding of international affairs and to an important aspect of Labour history.' Stan Newans, The Morning Star.
Archie Potts has done the Left a great service with his very well researched biography of this outstanding but hitherto neglected socialist and internationalist. Zilly's life is an inspiration to all on the Left in these difficult times. What Next.
'It is a book that can be heartily recommended'. North East History.

It is difficult to tell how much worth such stories have, but I estimate that this is somewhere between the equivalent of 30k to 100k leaflets. I expect this event to be very very busy. Especially as the Durham students have been targetted with publicity too this year, when last year they were ignored.

"City Library to host Left Wing Bookfair

A LEFT WING and anarchist literature bookfair is being held this weekend.

The fair will be held in Clayport library, Durham City, on Saturday, from noon to 4pm. Alongside bookstalls, there will be displays by various organisations, including event organiser the Workers Educational Association, and two books will be launched.

SUPPORT THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE DEMONSTRATION IN MIDDLESBROUGH

A large-scale demonstration in support of the people of Palestine is planned for Saturday, 17 January. The Israeli slaughter of the people of the Gaza strip has appalled a wide range of opinion across Teesside and south Durham.

The March will assemble at 11.00 am at the entrance to Albert Park on Linthorpe Rd, before moving through central Middlesbrough ending at Central Gardens at the Bottle of Note, near MIMA. Two or three speakers will address the marchers before dispersal.

The organisers of the Demonstration are Teesside Against the War, Stop the War Coalition, the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, religious groups and many other organisations.

The central messages of the march will be:
STOP THE MASSACRE
ISRAEL OUT OF GAZA
FREE PALESTINE

Peter Smith, Chair of Teesside Against the War, says “the barbaric Israeli assault on Gaza is an affront to humanity. One of the most populated places on earth is suffering appalling casualties every hour of every day. One and half million people are living and dying in an area about the size of greater Middlesbrough.”

All ready booked to speak is Yvonne Ridley, a journalist and campaigner, who has recently sailed into Gaza under the noses of the Israeli navy.
