View Full Version : 2010 Olympic Resistance!
Eastside Revolt

This is mostly directed at members who reside in Canada or possibly Seattle.
As many people know february 2010 will be the month of the Vancouver/ Whistler Olympics. There are a variety of groups in the Vancouver area and throughout occupied British Columbia that are drawing a resitance to the Games.
For those that are unaware, the city of Vancouver is located on stolen native land, the coming Olympics pose to further devastate and plunder the land, as well as to further empoverish native people as well as the whole poor polulation of Greater Vancouver. A homelessness crisis currently threatens all empoverished people in Vancouver, and as the Olympics draw closer more and more low income housing is being closed down and converted into high-end residences. The 2010 Olympics are sponsored by well known corporations with records of human rights abuses around the globe(General elctric, Coca-cola, DOW chemical, Birks Jewellery, Macdonald's etc...)
For those in Vancouver there is a demonstration scheduled for Feb 11th @ noon @ the Vancouver art gallery where we will be marching to the Hyatt Regency (home to the riot at the hyatt:D) where the BC Premier, the Mayor, and the Vancouver Olympic Committee will be holding a luncheon, the plan is to disrupt the meeting.
For those across the country we would appreciate some support in any form possible (I'm sure there is a Royal Bank (another Olympic sponsor)somewhere in your area that can be attacked(this has already been happening in Ottawa)). Aswell there is a torch run that will soon be going from Halifax to Vancouver, which will be possible to disrupt, or even stop, before ever reaching Vancouver.

Let's fuck this shit up!

This is just a bad idea waiting to happen. The only way for the propaganda of the deed to work in this case would be to have some way of disseminating information as to why the olympics are morally deplorable. Quite frankly, people love the olympics. The mainstream media will not broadcast the reasons behind your obstruction, it will just be "Evil anarchists hate sporting events and personal enjoyment!". Unless you can find a way to get the info out there, don't do anything too drastic and give the rest of us a bad name.

Why else would you obstruct something then? To make yourself feel good?
Something this big won't be stopped by a few anarchists with good intentions. Direct action could only be applied at certain times (certainly not continuously), and therefore individual deeds would have a propogandistic value. But, as I said, unless there's some way to disseminate anti-olympics info on a mass scale, then all you're going to do is alienate the masses.

Erm...its rather sad but that is probably the case for a lot actions by "leftists." Most protests, "obstructions," etc. do very little to actually resist state repression and are hardly a immenent threat to capitalism.
So, while it may not seem very stratigic, many actions can be seen to mainly serve to uplift the morale of "activists." This is not necessarily a "bad" tactic in times of increased repression.
I am not saying this action in question necessarily functions as such.

Just because an action is done for the purpose of propaganda, which is indeed the purpose of a majority of actions, does not make it prop. of the deed. You are forgeting the "deed" part which often implies some sort of illigality and often violence. None of which was mentioned in regard to the action in this thread.

Which is fine, if the action in question is either largely ignored by the media or covered positively by the media. Obstructing the olympics won't be. This is a dead end, unless there's a huge info campaign to accompany the obstruction.

Sorry, I mis-operationalized the term. Ignorance, forgetfulness, and brain-farts. Monday morning at it's finest:)

If you check out www.no2010.com (http://www.no2010.com) you will see that this is a large movement not just a few people. There is and has been a large "info" campaign to accompany the direct action element for years now.
At today's action(led by the native 2010 resistance) we were successful in drawing media attention, but unable to enter the buiding, regardless we will keep trying, and we hope activists throughout the country will stand in solidarity with us.
BTW I'm not sure how to "sticky" a topic but if there's any movement from my locality that deserves attention this is a big one.

How succsessful have you guys been in spreading info outside of BC? I'm in Ontario, fairly active locally, and haven't heard a thing about this (I also get the daily activist bulletin here, which lists upcoming actions and whatnot).
Thanks for the link, and I'll check that out and spread it around. Good luck, if you can pull it off (bearing in mind your responsibility to the rest of the movement).

An organization I am envolved with has close ties to OCAP (ontario coalition against poverty), as far as I know they are well aware of what has been going on here.
