Has anyone done any sort of work trying to approximate upper and lower bounds of death tolls attributable to U.S. presidents, directly and indirectly? It'd be an interesting and, I think, revealing list.

Wars are a natural part of ruling class insanity. Irrelevant to specific presidents or rulers.

Aye, well enough, but it's become common practice to tout "death tolls" of "horrible dictators" as if this is proof positive that We're Really Good. While I don't think that ideally these are the grounds one should argue on, I think if one were able to it wouldn't be without utility.
