I recently finished reading the book and watching the movie. the movie really sucks, so don't even bother. but I am curious as to what other people took away from the book. It really reenforced the idea that the right in the US is too well armed and too well prepared for when SHTF (shit hits the fan) while the left is not armed/prepared enough. also as I worked in a post office, i was very inspired by the protagonists idea that mail=civilization=modernity.

No question about it, the book was infinately better (Costner decided to go his own way, make a patriotic flick rather than the excellent peice that the postman was.).

Yes, the right wing does have huge arsenals, but that is because the governenment is right wing. Naturally, these militia people are their reserves, their footsoldiers, their local line of defense against reaction.

The movie was mildly entertaining though.

Additionally many ex-military are hard core jingoistic right winger patriots, ready and sworn to defend america from all enemies foreign and domestic.

I've talked to a few people, many recent immigrants to America, who rather liked the movie. I guess there was something about the crap they had to deal with in the states, as juxtaposed against the ideals they came with, that Costner went through that kind of spoke to them.

i think the setting is one of the best i've seen in terms of a realistic post-apocalyptic world, but most of the movie is just too over the top and ridiculous to really appreciate. worth seeing for some of the design if nothing else though.

I agree, I haven't read many post-apoc books but I love the genre of movies, video games, etc. The post man just did such a good job of painting a picture of the post-apoc world.

Yet another book ruined by a movie adaptation?

No, a book so good no movie could ruin it. But yes the film was a piss poor shoody adaptation of the brilliant book.

I've seen the movie but I have never read the book. I wonder if I can get my hands on a copy at the library....
