I know i'll probably get alot of heat for asking this kind of question, but pls keep in mind i'm not from the united states and i don't know much about fraternities.

Now from what i've heard, most of these things are just a bunch of rich kids wanting to get drunk in college. But are there any college fraternities that uphold the same principles we do? Or is it pointless to check out such a thing?

im not in america, but in my experience we used to have sports clubs at uni who sounded very similar. Generally very coarse, mysoginist, anti social drunkards and politically very much orientated towards the right.

You'd probably be better of sticking with the uni left wing groups, its unlikely these reactionary asshats will agree with your world view anyway.
Choose your friends wisely, best advice i can give you.

dont just say that sport playing 'popular' kids are all right-wing fucks, that is very close minded,
me and my friends at school were fairly sporto types and we weren't asshats, and they weren't all politically aware but neither are masses of workers,
we often got pissed, but we also stuck up for the few ethnic kids there wer in my school when the right wing skin head punks started to walk around with swastikas all over them, and me and 2 others got excluded for fighting with these types,

yes pic your friends wisely, but not on prejudices reinforced by ignorance and generalising whole social groups

no offence meant, I can only speak from my experience. To be fair, these elitist boy's clubs are generally very right wing in their world view no-one can deny that.
If there are any 'left wing sports clubs' i would love to meet them!

In America, Fraternities are where rich kids go. They get connections, drunk, and laid. It is little more than a confederacy of dunces.

I know that's what i heard. But I wanna know if there's any significant frats that are actually for change, or social justice, or anything like that. I wanna know if theres any special ones that AREN'T like what you described, although it seems like there isn't.

Where I go to school, most frat guys are jackasses. There is, however, a pretty decent one called Phi Kappa Tau. Mostly nerds/physics majors/fairly decent folk.

i love the way they think using greek letters to name them looks more intelligent.

That's actually a tradition that goes back a long time.

Not true. I know plenty of people in fraternities that certainly aren't rich.

Stop being so stereotypical.

you dont need to be rich to live in a fraternity

i guess it has its fun side if you like the gross drinking and sex (which i do) but by the same token talking to a frat kid (in my experience) is like snorting lines of salt and and proceeding to smash your head against the wall

Well yes alot of fraternities to haze, but at same time you do not have to subject yourself to any abuse. It all boils down to what you want to do.

I usually respect ComradeRed's insights, but he is way off the mark here.
