In 1901 Francisco Ferrer opened one of the first libertarian schools in defiance of the church, opened on the principles of free education without church influence, mutual aid, and anarchism. the school's stated goal was to "Educated the working-class in a rational, secular and non-coercive setting".
During the "tragic week" Ferrer was executed without reasoning, besides the fact of his revolutionary principles, but his spirit of free schools lived on. The US is stated to have almost 50 free schools run off of Ferrer's ideas and theories.
