What do people feel the role of the high school teacher should be?
I guess to be specific those dealing with the soft sciences... of which all seem to be grouped under the one banner of 'social studies', 'society and environment', etc

To communicate information about a particular topic to students at their respective school?

Well... with regards to the institutional power of the school, curriculum and board of education... ...the hierarchy of the school staff... ...etc
Example...
Myself - The US have been terrorizing South America for decades
Senior staff - You are only allowed to talk about World War 2 and Vietnam
Myself - The US attacked the Vietnamese well before the official Vietnam war. Vietcong is a propaganda term.
Senior staff - Please stick to what the text books say
Perhaps this is too self centered... I am just throwing the topic out there in general...

Oh, I see what you're saying.
Your responsibility is to kill the senior staff. They're vicious propagandists and a critical part of the imperialist machine that murders, directly and semi-directly, probably hundreds of thousands of people every year.

The role of a radical school teacher should be to join their union and be an active union militant; talk to other teachers and when they complain about students and parent and other teachers (teachers in the US are really disgruntled), turn the complaint around to talk about the system and class politics and how capitalism actually hinders real education.
If you teach high school, I guess you can try to incorporate some politics into your curriculum, but don't expect to be founding any Dead Polemicist Societies among your students.

Coincidentally, I am working on getting a degree in history so that I can teach high school. I will use the textbook for cases where the test requires it, then address the Western propaganda and allow students to contest my opinion. I find the only way to learn is to engage.
I believe more Leftists who have the financial capabilities should try to enter the public school system and contest the liberal/conservative environment that engulfs our society.

You should teach "Lies my teacher told me" - I bet the title alone would really get the interest of your students and it could help them to look more critically at the white-washed info they are presented with in most textbooks.

I really want to be a high school English teacher (or History I haven’t decided yet since I’m still in high school). Still, I’m nervous about being a teacher and having to deal with the crap the administration would try to constrict me with because the reason I want to be a teacher is to educate kids who normally feel stupid in school and make them excited about learning again. Thank you for this post. It’s given me some great ideas!

In my area, part of the pledge teachers have to sign is that they won't "spread communism." *Sigh*

I think that is a pretty cool idea to educate the people that don't feel like they could get through high school, or related reasons. I think that would be a great idea for a school to have a teacher like you because i know a lot of people that are having a hard time so i think you would be able to help people like them a lot.

Well my history teacher is Irish and i am extreemly open when taking about socialism he sort of hints that he agrees with my belifs like when he says stuff like been there when i tak of socialism and he seems to defend stalin alot. He doesn't worry me.
Be Ware what ur about to hear maybe the frekiest most pethatic way of brain wash ever:
I'm in an international school when your in grade 9 there is this subject called carreers it's literaly about rockerfellar and debenhams he teaches us how to convince someone to buy a peice of crap and how u should work most hours for the least salary cause if u don't they will "get an indian to do ur job" and how we should think of a career that suits future markets so we can get the maximum amount of salary. he says trick how to fool people into getting someone give u money you tell them for an over the top price and seem uncompramising make the person in front of u feel guilty for giving you slightly less money than you origanlly asked for but in reality it is wat u want or even more. there is like billion of these tricks on how to fool people into paying u money like being freindly or pretending to like something u really don't like. the other part of the is how to make ur boss like u so you would more likely picked for a promotion before ur coworkers.
All this in grade 9 14 years old. This propaganda is usually welcomed by the enterpeneaur parents. when i told my dad he was really pissed and he was like don't listen to that nazi
