How many of the restriced members here know how capitalism started?
and for clarification I define capitalism as;

I was told that mercantalism was the start of capitalism. My impression is that with industrialization and the rise of a middle class, the middle class demanded more power which interpretted into private property rights becoming the norm for economic organization.

What do you mean, when it became dominant or when it first started to develop? It didn't become dominant until about the late 17th century, early 18th century. It developed through out history and certain aspects of it has appeared in different time periods. For example, there were landless and property-less workers who wandered around the Ancient Greek world seeking work on farms and being paid in either hard coin or some of the goods he produced.

Marx described society as growing through three steps: first mercantilism, then from mercantilism capitalism would naturally occur, and eventually communism would be the higher phase of it all. I would say that capitalism as we know it today started after the French Revolution where a liberalized government with control over the market occured and citizen rights became big and not only distributed to the bourgoise and the upper property-owning classes. This showed a transfer into capitalism, and an escape from mercantilism, as France and its economy was previously run by oligarchs, monarchs, landlords, and property owners who controlled peasents and the working class and internalized social, economic and political rights within their own group.
