In the future, I think that the survivors will be taught that it was in the 9th of May 2007 that the United States turned from a bourgeoisie republic into full authoritarianism.

In layman's term, this act would enable the president to install some form of national emergency, which would enable him together with a National Continuity Coordinator to centralise all aspects of government, from the tribal level (of reservations) to local and state level up to the federal level, into the hands of himself.
He is also given the authority to indirectly confiscate all private property.
This directive could also be installed without asking the Congress or Senate for approval. Hitler at least created his dictatorship with the support of the Reichtag. Bush (or the next president) won't need to do that the day next major crisis will explode.
The United States is not a liberal democracy anymore, but a dictatorship veiled in a constitutional facade.
