has anyone seen this film? apparently, it is a movie about socialists in the u.s. it was also blacklisted (i think the only u.s. film blacklisted) for it's politics. i was reading some chomsky yesterday and he mentioned it. he said it's a pretty rare, and excellent, flick.

People who maintain that the US has "freedom of speech" and that socialists are now tolerated since the end of a particular era of McCarthyism disgust me. They still actively come after many of our leaders, arrest them at any given opportunity and trump up charge against them. The persecution has never stopped. It only toned down and went under a different name. In fact, the only reason such widespread persecution without pretense ending was the undeniable fact that McCarthy charged a lot of people falsely. The fall of a figurehead does not stop the terror.

wasnt just socialists. it was communists and fellow travelers who were all 'white'listed that made it. and it wasnt about socialists either. it was about mexican-american mine workers. hit on class, race, gender, in the early 1950s. great film
