And I'm stunned to admit that I think the "Stalin apologists" are right in criticizing those who quote the sources comparing him to Hitler, or worse.

... Up until this point I had thought it was just some post-Soviet pride, but other than right-wing sources, the only evidence points to a population growth rate that outpaced West Europe and a prison rate less than America's own...

Does anyone have information on Mao?

I admit to being a little stunned by finding this information about Stalin... If even half of it is true I may have to rethink my generalizations of the USSR and China prior to the "revisionists" completely..
