They are all quite obviously "Soviet", and they actually look quite good compared to some of the christmas cards that are available in the West.

Yes Red Anarchist you are absolutely too right I'd rather prefer these Soviet cards as well as you.
It's obvious from hammer&sickled flag hanging on space shuttle that they are communists.

Yeah, these are New Year cards, not Christmas. See, Christmas is a religious holiday and it was not so wide spread here, especially in the Soviet time. New Year means much more in Russia than anywhere else.

Yes, January 7, not many people know about that.
We also have 2 New Years:January 1, January 14. The 2nd is called Old New Year
The Revolution in 1917 was on October 25, then after the calendar changed it became November 7
According 2 these 2 calendars, my Granma celebrates her birthday twice;)

There is a decorated tree as everywhere else. Earlier it used to have a star on top. By the way, this tree is traditionally a pagan holiday symbol.
We have Father Frost (Ded Moroz) instead of Santa. They say this Frost explains smth about Russian character: he's drunk and has a girl with him. She's called Snegurochka (Snow Girl).
I recommend you the movie "Ironiya Sud'by" ("The Irony of Fate") to see the New year celebration in the USSR. It's the realest comedy. We, Russians, have many movies but there's a tradition to watch "Ironiya Sud'by" EVERY YEAR. And we never get bored with it! I've seen it for about 15 times, maybe, more.

That's it, but they say it's a paradox to have a granddaughter without havin' a wife and children, people even argue about this fact, but what for?:D

If you showed something like that to Western kids during the cold-war, they'd have thought "Wow these Russians seem like nice people", "Everything looks happy and nice in the picture".

Happiness and celebration? Not those ruthless, godless, damned commies?
