From Granma:
Russi's Lower Chamber approves resolution on the Five

MOSCOW.- On Thursday, the Duma (Russian Lower Chamber) approved a resolution on the unjust sentencing of the five Cuban patriots imprisoned in the United States after a rigged trial in the state of Florida, reports PL.

Ivan Nikitchuk of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation presented the project; he commented that the verdict in the Miami court is a true affront to those who dedicated themselves to defending their people.

Nikitchuk was referring to the sentences ranging from 15 years to life handed down to Gerardo Hernández, Fernando González, Tony Guerrero, René González and Ramón Labañino, imprisoned in the United States since 1998.

Cuba charges the United States with violating the Five’s rights

GERARDO Hernández, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González and René González have been placed in solitary confinement since February 28, locked up all day with no contact with the other prisoners or the outside world.

They have been denied all visits including those from their lawyers or the Cuban consul. They are not even allowed telephone communication with their lawyers and families.

By prohibiting contact between the Five and their defense lawyers, the United States government is violating basic legal principles and standards.

Call for an international week of solidarity with the Five

BUENOS AIRES, March 5.— The Argentine Committee to Free the Five Cubans prisoners in the United States called for an international week of struggle for the men, now incarcerated for over four years, Prensa Latina reported.

The call announces that the campaign, taking place between March 30 and April 7, is in support of the defense team’s presentation of an appeal in the Atlanta court.

The announcement, publicized throughout Argentina, urges for as many activities, protests and simultaneous acts to be held in as many countries as possible, and recalled similar events organized in 24 cities worldwide on September 12, to mark their fourth year of imprisonment.

This second round should multiply voices at this key moment for achieving the Five’s freedom and the court must listen to our demands for justice, the Argentine committee declared.

Likewise, it was explained that on this occasion the protests will last one week, with the intention that the men’s cause receive publicity in the press for as long as possible.

The Committee also announced the opening of a new Internet page called Amigos de Cuba (Friends of Cuba), dedicated to Argentine-Cuba friendship and solidarity (www.amigosdecuba.com.ar)

(Amigos de Cuba is my friend's site)!! She's doing a great job!!

Subject: Prison conditions of five Cuban prisoners

Dear Director Sawyer:

I am writing you to express my grave concern about the situation of five Cuban prisoners who, in separate prisons, have been put into solitary confinement in late February 2003, without any justification.

The five Cuban prisoners are Gerardo Hernández, Reg. #58739-004, U.S. Penitentiary, Lompoc, California; Antonio Guerrero, Reg. #58741- 004, U.S.P. Florence, Colorado; Ruben Campa, Reg. #58733-004, (aka Fernando González) F.C.I. Oxford, Wisconsin; Luis Medina, Reg. #58734-004, (aka Ramon Labañino) U.S.P. Beaumont federal prison, Texas; and René González, Reg. #58738-004, F.C.I. Edgefield, South Carolina.

They are imprisoned since September 1998, when they were arrested by the FBI on trumped-up charges of espionage on the United States. In reality, they were defending their country from acts of terrorism that emanate from Miami.

As the five Cubans are known to be model prisoners, I fear that the solitary confinement to which they are being submitted is mere political repression. I am concerned for the safety of the five Cuban prisoners, and I vehemently protest their unjust and unnecessary solitary confinement. Their exemplary behavior does not warrant this kind of treatment.

I also ask you to allow their attorneys full and unrestricted access to their clients, in order to safeguard their rights as prisoners and their dignity as human beings.

Hoping for a positive reply, and thanking you for your attention,

Yours sincerely,

Your name.

"...The Revolution’s generosity and tolerance should not be expected when we are witnesses to brutal and repugnant acts like the cruel and merciless treatment being meted out to our five heroic compatriots who risked their lives defending their people and the U.S. people against terrorism and death, whilst mercenaries without scruples or conscience — the vast majority of whom are hardened slackers — are living by selling off the portions of the homeland for the empire’s gold anticipating impunity."
