In my school we're studying the Russian revolution, unfortunately there's alot of stuff about Lenin which is less than friendly, to a large extent this is just the official version of events as dictated by the government. However could someone give me the fact so that I can tell my friends to ignore the textbook without doubt

lenin had a good idea in mind when he set the system up, but he created too many collective farms and restricted free speech to the point of punishment by death. stalin only made things worse. in truth, lenin wasn't nice at all. however, he wasn't a "dictator". that would mean complete control. don't say he was GOOD, say he wasn't a dictator. i edit my textbooks at school. you should too :D

Well, to start out I'd say there's really no replacement for reading what the man himself had to say:
Lenin Internet Archive (http://www.marxists.org/archive/lenin/index.htm)
Obviously that will take a bit of time, so do you have any more specific questions we can answer?

Thanks for the link, no I've not got specific questions, it was just that my books and notes seemed to suggest he was quite Stalinistic which seemed ridiculous, thanks for clearing this up comrades

I recommend you this link. It's Trotsky's "In defence of October", a speech he delivered in Copenhagen in November 1932. It contains 5 pages.
