I made a bet with someone about the vietnam war being an economic war fought to further the interests of US imperialism, rather than a war against an opposing ideology.

I read some shit justifying my position ages ago but I can't remember any of it so I need some new sources.

Yeah basically this guy was saying that the US had to stop the "spread of communism" because if it allowed it to spread eventually the US would have to fight a war for it's freedoms on it's own soil against "dictatorial communism".

I made the point that many of the governments and movements were pursuing humble progressive goals which brought them into conflict with US corporate interests.

They had no choice but to turn to the USSR for millitary, economic and diplomatic assistance.

Jacobo Arbenz was hardly a "communist" and his democratically elected regime was overthrown with CIA backing.
