Federalism can be greatly simplified as emphasis on the federal government rather than the state or local governments or as a focus on centralized authority. An example of this was a movement in the early United States which sought to bring the government under control of a national government that would rule over provincial states. Meanwhile anti-federalism was the name given to the philosophy of two movements in the 18th century that opposed such actions.
