A regular member wrote on the O.I. board that Cuba should seize Guantanamo Bay. I responded that it would result in Cuba becoming the 51st United State within two years after the attempted seizure.
What does everyone believe would happen?

the united states would finally have a reason for an invasion if that where to happen.
cuba cant do anything about it so it would be better to just ignore it.

Well, if they did take it back they would be breaking international law, and would be seen as the aggressor. This means the US would have the legal right to defend itself.
EDIT: Also, Cuba did cash one of the Rent Checks and so from a legal stand point the validated the lease agreement set forth in the 1934 treaty. Not that I agree with the US position, just speaking from a legal stand point.

I thought that Castro vowed, and never has, cashed one of the lease checks. Why did this come about?

Wikipedia says the check was cashed because of confusion during the early days of the revolution.
At first, the agreement was for a 99 year lease, but then a treaty in 1934 made it permanent or perpetual.
The situation is absolutely ridiculous, in terms of the amount paid each year for the lease and for the infringement upon Cuba's sovereignty.

The US military would wipe out the Cuban invading force with ease, international sanctions would be placed on Cuba causing its economy to collapse, and that would probably be it.
That's why they never attempted to do that; it's foolish.

Castro should do nothing. If anything, that concentration camp makes the American government look terrible, and that only helps the revolution. Their actions will dig their own graves.

If it were seized by Cuba, we would likely see an immediate invasion of Cuba. The US would prop up a puppet government and massive US investments would roll in. Within a few years the island would be a prime destination for US tourista imperialists.

Is that a risk that can be taken though? How many will die while we sit around and wait for a Revolution. I understand Cuba cannot invade for reasons already stated, and I think getting general opinion in every street in every corner of the world to conduct mass protest would be better. The threat of Revolution, no matter how unlikely, has often brought imperialism to its knees - I mean look at the success of O'Connell and Parnell in Ireland in the 19th Century - I think a similar thing should be tried here. Violence will fail, I'm telling you this now it will not succeed in stopping Guantanamo Bay, the U.S. is far too strong at the moment, if we get everyone to protest and threaten violence we may have more success. If we act against them they can justify acting against us - it will be harder for them to justify acting against us if we only threaten action.
