Rush is a Canadian rock band comprising bassist, keyboardist, and lead vocalist Geddy Lee, guitarist Alex Lifeson, and drummer and lyricist Neil Peart. Rush was formed in the summer of 1968, in the neighbourhood of Willowdale in Toronto, Ontario, by Alex Lifeson, Jeff Jones, and John Rutsey.
I've been listening to Rush lately and was wondering if there are any fans of them here?
Their most well-known songs are:
Rush - Limelight (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGGdW4-UYbY)
Rush - Tom Sawyer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7DFsBcVMDA)
Rush - The Trees (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvQ2JF-glvw)

Aren't they an anti-communist band?

The Trees would be a song against socialism.
But they are still an okay band, I like Bastille Day and Something For Nothing.

How are they anti-communist? Do you mean their personal political views or their music?

One could just as easily interpret it as a song against capitalism or class-society in general. In fact, I consider that more appropriate given the nature of the lyrics.

Well I've never listened to these cats, but you always read of em in guitar magazines.
After listening to Limelight they sound rather 80s, although they were a 70s band I think.
But The Trees was quite decent, so perhaps I'll torrent an album.
What's their best album?

Maybe, I like the song, but never really focused on the lyrics but some guy made a list with conservative rock songs and put it on 11.

That list is stupid, it lists songs such as Revolution by Lennon as conservative.
It's not revolutionary but to paint it conservative is a bit of a stretch, to say the least.

Rush are crazy libertarian types.

Rock the Casbah is not a right wing song its a song about Britain selling arms to Saudi Arabia. Joe Strummer and the Clash were certinal a left wing band, as by the way are the proclaimers who have vocally supported the Scottish Socialist Party. What an absurd list. Apparently Lennon's song you say you want a revolution originally had lines about wanting to be part of it all etc but he was forced to revise them.

Umm, Rush is influenced both in- and outside its music by libertarianism and objectivist philosophy. You can look this up anywhere. One symbol is of the abstract man against the red star, which symbolizes "collectivism" (the bogeyman of Randroids). It's pretty crazy stuff.
Their music is still great, though.

Hmm, it seems to me that a lot of their lyrics have existentialist philosophy in them, like for example the song Freewill and also Limelight.

2112 is the retelling of an Ayn Rand story. Read up on the two of them she was very influential in Peart's lyrics.

I know that song is Ayn Randish, but some of their other songs (even though they may have meant it differently) can be interpreted in a progressive manner.
And in music I prefer to interpret songs progressively, as much as possible. Some songs have a different meaning to different people, it's subjective in some cases.

That may be so but I fear that come the revolution we will have to put Rush up against the proverbial wall for being right wing scum.
Shame, as Neil Peart is one helluva drummer.

"Working Man" is the best song by Rush: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yidi3KiCIiw
Lyrics:
I get up at seven, yeah
And I go to work at nine
I got no time for livin
Yes, Im workin all the time
It seems to me
I could live my life
A lot better than I think I am
I guess thats why they call me
They call me the workin man
They call me the workin man
I guess thats what I am
I get home at five oclock
And I take myself out a nice, cold beer
Always seem to be wonderin
Why theres nothin goin down here
It seems to me
I could live my life
A lot better than I think I am
I guess thats why they call me
They call me the workin man
They call me the workin man
I guess thats what I am
Well they call me the workin man
I guess thats what I am

Just look at that guy's picture. What would he know about rock? You'd have to be a pretty big retard to think that Led Zeppelin's "Battle of Evermore" is a song against communism.

Yeah Led Zeppelin is probably the most apolitical rockband ever.
