View Full Version : Christmas presents - ...what do you want?

The title and descrption of this thread look like they belong in chit-chat but I think this thread belongs here.
For my presents from my friends I am going to ask for something unusual. Most girls my age ask for jewellery, chocolate, CD's or toiletries but instead I am asking them to donate to a charity the money they would have otherwise have spent on me (sorry if my syntax isn't perfect, I'm sure you get the gist). I would prefer them to give the money to Shelter as they do alot of work at this time of year, when life is especially tough on homeless people and I do not need this money whereas they do.
I'd recommend this approach to anyone who is not recieving necessities as christmas presents this year. Obviously this is up to you but I'm taking this action to improve the world this christmas, which is what it is supposed to be about after all.

you know, this christmas has really made me think about who i am and who i want to be. sadly, i must say that at this point in time i am a consumer. a consumer of things that i don't need. from the time i was little i have always wanted stuff that is not esential to my day to day life. it sucks too because it is so easy to get used to having stuff and now, at 23, giving it up is so tuff. anyone else ever have these feelings? anyone have success dealing with our inherent consumerism? i would love to change, it would be great if some one had some expirience i could use as advice. thanks.

Len, do you want that game for x-box were your the US army and your on a mission to kill suddam?
what a sick game
anger is a gift: yes it is though. lifes habits are hard to break, and the older youve had them, the hardedr it is. its extremly hard for me cuz my famly has always been, but the expensive GAP, brand. "lets go the THE GAP" is a daily saying my uncle uses. now a days its feels wrong, but sometimes it is just WAY to tempting.

I think all you guys need to give alot of thought to your lives and myour beliefs. Doubltess you've heard the thing aobut a teacher askiung his class what they'd do to let 10 hostages go free, but if you haven't I'll give a quick summary:
A teacher askes his class if they were caputured with 10 other people what would they do to free them:
option 1: The guards shoot you and in return the others go free, about 3 people put their hands up.
option 2: you'll be stuck in prison for three years and then go free, whilst the others go free immediately, ovre half the class put their hands up
option 3: You go without luxury items for the rest of your life and you all go free, nearly everyone puts their hands up.
The teacher then says all those who put their hands up for option 3 are hypocrites as they could do this and they could save several lives.
Think about what you could do. Come on, I know you aren't the richest people on the planet but I'm sure you can spare a couple of quid now and then.

I'm going to be a capitalist bastard and get an X-Box. Anyway who wants to debate me on getting one should bring over an extra controller and we shall debate over a game of Halo.

giving money to charity instead of gifts is a quality idea. I'm now gonna do that for some of my mates and they'll do it for me.
I'll have to buy something for my Cappie friends though... they'll break in time.... lol
I reckon I could go without gifts on Christmas, but it's hard to show people you care about them by saying 'Yeah, I didnt get you anything for christmas, I gave it to Christian Aid instead' you know?
I will celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. Christmas is not about getting drunk and eating too much, that's Coca-cola christmas...
Yeah, I'm a consumer. I buy stuff for my PC, and I buy CD's and clothes. Although I don't buy stuff from GAP etc (it's from a shop we fondly refer to as the 'Goth Shop' or from the army and navy), I still feel a little bad when I look in my wardrobe and see a couple sets of clothes, when some people dont have any. Then I look at my Computer (comprised entirely of american parts) and feel a little worse. Sigh, oh well, i can't help it. I need a PC!

"I'm" getting and already have a Play Station 2 for Christmas. It's my brother's idea, and he sold the Nintendo 64 to get some money to pay for it. It was his idea though, as I didn't really care what 'we' got.
Getting it chipped as well in a week.

hey, that's cool SenitelofDestiny, everyone needs to have material stuff to an extent, and you've got the consciousness that will stop you going over board, unlike some of the epople who've posted on this thread unfortunately!
My plan is to ask other people to give to charity and I'll buy them pressies, cos I don't know anyone who'd rather benfit someone else than themselves. You gotta bow to their wishes I'm afraid otherwise they won't even try to understand.
I really am impressed, keep it up. You can help change the world with your way of thinking!

Whats wrong with celebrating a christian holiday? whats wrong with christianity, the first christian church was communist, gave all and had all in common, why cant i as a communist be a christian? Jesus was one of the best social revolutionaries of all time!

The online service hasn't been set up in this country yet. We're have to be one of the most backward internet countries in the "developed" world.

I think it's fine if your a Christian, a lot of what Jesus reportedly said was very socialistic (is that a word?). My dad is a socialist basically because he follows what Jesus says about giving and loving your enemy, although I don't think he is quite as left or libertarian as I am.
