If Chavez were a right-wing American tinpot, the army would have taken control of the country and death squads would be brutalising workers and peasants all over the country.

Chavez isn't done yet. He lossed the referendum but (I hope) there will be others. It's time for him to turn Bolivarianism into Marxism-Leninism and Socialism into Communism.

While he might simply not do this, he can still establish socialism. I don't think this defeat has that much meaning.

Hi, you are right, and we have to point out that Mexico, USA, UK and most capitalist states use the military and death squads against their own population, kill people at will without even being in elections, or in a extraordinary situation (Examples: Sean Bell killed by NY police, a 45 yr old lady killed at airport by TSA. An Ecuatorian tourist passenger, killed at Miami International Airport by TSA)

Well Chavez's brother is a well known Marxist and there are PLENTY of marxists who influence him. I think he'll be listening to them since this thing failed. Of course he risks the internal battle in the PSUV between him and the left vs the right wing (aka social democrats) of the party and remember, the social democrats would go to the opposition which would mean a loss of votes.

It time for him and the revolutionary leftists in the country to educate the workers and poor so that if Chavez decides to challenge the right-wing of his party, he can have the support of the people.

And today in Venezolana de television on a show called "dando y dando", he stated that he's not done and that socialism will keep going because the people want socialism (which is true since the opposition gained basically very little extra votes) and that we should look forward to the future because he still has plans (he referred to a "plan b").

Does the constitution allow him to bring up this reform referendum again in say another couple of years?

I'm convinced that with a bit more education the poor majority would choose these reforms. I mean, Jesus, who wouldnt want the working week reduced by 8 hours?
