Hello,

I've posted maybe 20 times and have enjoyed reading the forums. However, I have never posted an introduction, until now.

I'm from the US and split time between the East Coast and the Mid-West, where I attend a University as a graduate student. I'm 25.

My educational background, I'll admit, is mostly in capitalist schools of economics. I've read far more Von Mises than Marx, more Smith than Stalin, and I know more about the Chicago School than I do Che Guevara. Though all this is changing.

That said, I am not a capitalist--thus my interest in this forum. I believe that the means of production should be owned by the people. Moreover, I believe that decisions that affect society in any meaningful way should also be made by the people. I hope this is good enough to not get myself restricted to the OI forum.

As long as you're a lefty it doesn't matter what your knowledge base is. There is no list of books we restrict you for reading.

Coming from such a background, what made you turn to leftist politics?

I don't know. It wasn't a sudden thing; I wasn't a capitalist one day and then a leftist the next.

Just as I grew and saw different things and made different inferences based on the world around, Leftism is where I ended up.

I'm not as critical of capitalism as some. There are different ways to distribute wealth in society and competition through the market is one of them. I don't look at my land lord and say "damn you you imperialist, how dare you charge me rent!" In our current capitalistic system, charging rent is what my land lord has to do; otherwise he wouldn't be able to afford the property. Also, I won't say capitalism doesn't "work." It actually works works really well for some people as some have become extraordinarily wealthy. But, the problem is it tends to be limited to a smaller portion of society than I would like to see. You can try wealth redistribution, but that just furthers conflict between the haves and the have nots.

I guess what I've come to now is the need for a new system. Something were the people are in control of their destinies and not oppressed by the few. Something like socialism/communism (haven't decided which). I'm still working this all out in my mind.

I don't think the argument is, or ever has been that it doesn't work; but rather that it doesn't work for all (or even most).

EDIT: By the way, welcome to RevLeft.
