I just went to a presentation at the university about the new book the shock doctrine, a book about how leaders take advantage of crisis to pass a bunch of laws that benefit big corporations while the mass population is still in shock.

A good book, but the writing itself could use some improvement in my opinion.

It is a well written, insightful book. Written in Naomi Klein's style of straight facts. I recommend it.

I'm not exactly sure how true Klein's theory is though, as an overall trend. I can think of more than a few cases where government and states have stepped IN to a situation after a disaster, rather than throwing the populace to the proverbial corporatist wolves.
And this isn't exactly suprising, either. Any state that pays ANY attention to what the populace thinks, and isn't a totally corrupt kleptocracy, is probably going to step into situations when the populace demands it should. Examples of this sort of thing abound, from the New Deal to the aftermath of "war socialism" and rationing in Britain.
And usually this act of stepping in wasn't done isn't out of altruism, either.
That being said, Klein's book is an interesting take on things, I think.
