I'm curious what everyone's opinions on the US Peace Corps are. I'm interested in joining when I'm older so that I can get experience in traveling and helping villages and countries in need, something I would not be able to afford to do on my own.
What do you all think?

I considered joining the Peace Corps for a while, but changed my mind when I found out that it was created by Kennedy to counter the spread of socialism in the third world and sort of put a benevolent face on capitalism, given a lot of the humanitarian services Cuba was providing in Latin America. There are probably better organizations that are not affiliated with the U.S. government to go through comrade, though I unfortunately cannot recommend any.

That's my sentiments exactly. I completely see how the Peace Corps is an attempt to put a happy face on US-interests, yet it is still helpful to those people as well. And also, I want to join for the personal experience and skills that I can learn.
If anyone can provide any alternatives to the Peace Corps that are similar in practice, please let me know of them.

The peace corp is part of the US Selective Service. It probably isn't what you would expect. It is very frustrating for most people, but also very rewarding.
