...to get rid of the white background on bmp jpeg or gif files using MS Paint?

I need to be able to import a triangular shaped image onto a 3d model without any of the background from the image showing.

I'm not quite sure what you mean. Maybe change the file type to PNG or something?

Take the below image for example. What I would need is a method that would extract the star from the white background so I have a 'star shaped' image without any background whatsoever.

there's no real 'smooth' way to do it

use the lasoo tool, but it might look quite dodgy

get photoshop or at least an open source alternative (I think there's even OS paint programs which support layers), the layering system makes things like this a doddle

can you recommend a link to a reliable free download? I'm trying to build my hometown on google earth you see.
