Serenity (2005), directed by Joss Whedon, is a science fiction film about a space crew of small-time criminals (independents, or Browncoats) who take on a psychotic seventeen-year-old girl on the run from the totalitarian government (the Alliance). They soon find out that she's a fugitive because she knows a terrible government secret. She leads them to the site of the deed, partly consciously, and they must broadcast the evidence all over the universe.

Badly written synopsis from IMDb that I don't really like but I'm too lazy to write on my own: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0379786/synopsis

This film has a load of really interesting themes that I liked, and so I'll list them. If you didn't read the above, the Alliance are the "bad guys."

SERENITY - Themes

Alliance position:

Humans are monsters
Creation of perfect world is ultimate goal
Humans will comply
Truth is of no importance
Humans are "things"
Humans can and will be meddled with
Humans can be made "sinless"
Higher-purpose/morality exists
Love is dangerous

Browncoat position (the good guys - these are the real themes of the film):

Humans make the universe worth it/interesting
Happiness/unity/truth is ultimate goal
Humans are stubborn
Truth is vitally important and will ultimately be discovered
Humans cannot be described in one word
Humans do not like to be meddled with
Humans are fundamentally "sinful" and proud of it
People look after their own
Love is among biggest assets

So, it's one of the most thematically complex, and (to me) thematically pleasing, films ever made. Most of those themes are pretty much consistent with communist ideas. And the most inspiring short quote of the entire film?

"Can't stop the signal."

It comes from a minor character who illegally broadcasts information all over the universe. Eventually that terrible government secret is out. Says a lot about what we can do in the Information Age. Truth is vital, and it's easier than ever to let it be known.

Anyhow, great movie, funny movie, inspiring movie. My favorite movie. Joss Whedon's one of the smartest writers out there.

Comments on the film, on my analysis?
