Anyone have opinions on stoicism? IT was the primary philosophy of the Roman Republic. Its reliance on natural law was somewhat of a precursor to Materialism and it believed in the brotherhood of man.
What interests me the most is the tough character it produces which seems to be a model to any revolutionary.

Do you mean the philosophy of never retaliating to having shit shovelled in your face?
Yea I don't think it's that good. Being able to tolerate is good, but that's it.

its not even about tolerance..its about hiding your emotion..you could be breaking down on the inside as long as no one sees your weakness...stoicism is just an act to look tough and really wont accomplish anything...were all human..if your scared to show your emotion cuz you think you'll look weak...well get over it...your no better than anyone else...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the gist of stoicism was completely seperating emotion from judgement rather than hiding it...

Liu Shaoqi's "How to be a good communist" is kind of a Red Stoicism
Epicetus and Marcus Aurelius have pretty good handbooks on the Stoic way.
But my favorite is cato the younger who shoewd how to live a stoic life.

Well there is a natural law element to stoicism. Emotions are bad for judgment only insofar as they contradict natural law, reason or virtue. Emotions being involved in judgment per se isn't a problem for a Stoic.
