One million protested in Rome for a new wellfare and social security and against precarization. The demonstration was pointed at Berlusconis §30, the Biagi-law which has made the labour market more insecure and the workers more precarious.
The demonstration was organised by the three big communist newspapers, Liberazone, Il Manifesto and Carta and showed a huge force against Prodis center-politics. The social democratic union-movement did not support the demonstration, but the big union Fiom (metalworkers) joined up. Fiom is getting closer and closer to the communist parties.
The base unions and the social centers did not participate in organizing the demonstrations, but they set up a "consultazione precaria", a council meeting and self-organized elections on the Biagi-law and the 23th of july agreement between the capitalist organisations and the big labour unions. 118 202 voted in the elections all over Rome (often where there are a lot of precarious workers), 15 340 (13%) for and 102 315 (86%) against.
The autonomous base-unions are going on a general strike 9th of november. The student organisations are probably joining up as well with major university occupations all over Italy.
