Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa has refused to renew Washington's lease on the Manta air base. In an interview with Reuters Correa said he would renew the lease on one condition -- the United States allow Ecuador to build a military base in Miami.

Correa said: "If there's no problem having foreign soldiers on a country's soil, surely they'll let us have an Ecuadorian base in the United States." It is estimated that United States has over 700 military bases in foreign countries.

This stand against imperialism should be welcomed, and shows that the swing to the left in Latin America is now beggining to question in concrete ways the influence of American impeiralism in what was traditionally reguarded as "uncle sams' backyard". However ultimatley only a drive towards socialism and workers rule can result in the end of American imperialist influence in Latin America, otherwise the Latin Americans face economic domination by the big banks and monopolies of America and other imperialist countries..

Very nice rhetoric, if true. But still rhetoric.

Let's have a little look at what has been happening in Ecuador for a while now (beyond merely anti-imperialistic rhetoric, and on the way to building socialism and workers' control).

For what it's worth, the statement about the base (including the joke about Miami) is merely a re-iteration of what Correa said about a year ago. There are other, much more interesting things that have been said and done since...

Let me see...

1. He denied being a Marxist throughout his election campaign, instead emphasising his Roman Catholicism and his opposition to the nationalisation of American and multinational parasites in Nicaragua.

2. His party is a member of an international organisation whose Latin American affiliates have a history of subverting the aspirations of the proletariat and whose Venezuelan affiliates have gone so far as to

3. He's so radically misogynist that be sexually abused his step-daughter and forced everyone in his party to back a law that would remove the exemption allowing women to abort their pregnancies should their lives be threatened if they carry the fetus to term.

4. He has made deals with crooked right-wing politicians and former contra insurgents.

Ortega is about as trustworthy as a Clinton.

He has more good words to say about Pope Nazinger than he does about Karl Marx.
