Yeah appreciate punk, just a shame it deserves to die (and if you don't understand that reference I highly doubt you listened to alot of punk).
Add Jerry's Kids to the list, anybody into early harcore should check it out and Spermbirds btw, some of the best punk to come out of Germany.
(btw I find it insulting for anybody to put Crass on the list ;) )

Crass were anarcho pacifists. Formed in an arty squat in London by Steve Ignorant & Penny Rimbauld. Steve's stayed on in the punk scene whilst Penny has gone to jazz.
Crass were and still are massively influencial in the punk scene, and beyond, many bands getting thier 1st break on thier label or labels of bands influenced by them. Conflict, Flux of pink Indians, even Bjork [back in the days when she was into punk] recorded on the Crass label. The Subhumans were going to record thier 1st album in thier studios but it was fully booked so they recorded on Flux's label, who also got thier 1st recordings done by Crass. Before Crass it was rare for bands to record and distribute thier own records. Even rarer for them to sell them for cost or less, look back at any number of U.K. punk albums from the 80s and you'll see in the top corner a pay no more than £XXX that came from Crass.
Crass records are rough are pretty bad due to a lack of production and musical skills, but go on you tube n look for the vids of their songs being done by Conflict with Steve Ignorant on vocal and tell me that aint punk.
Just cause you don't like something doesn't stop it from being punk, I hate Skrewdriver and thier ilk don't stop em from being punk though. I don't like when bands sign to majors, don't stop em from being punk either. Punk is a broad church, everything from Crass to Generation X, The Ramones to the Dead Kennedys and not all appeals to everyone.

i've been meaning to ask this: what makes the ramones punk?
The Ramones were part of the origonal punk scene back in the mid 70s New York along with the likes of the Talking Heads, Blondie, etc.. Mclaren just kidnapped the name for the emerging British alternative scene. The british scene just took it further and redefined the name. The Ramones can claim to be the 1st ever punk band playing from 74, but there's loads of arguing over that, but theres no doubt of the influence of the bruvvers on the London scene, they played london in 75 and almost everyone who was in the 1st wave of brit punk was in the crowd.
Paul Fox, guitarist of the Ruts has died earlier this week. Raven, bassist of Killing Joke too :(

i guess, yeah. i dunno. i just find it really annoying when kids today are all like "YEAH! RAMONES! PUNKROCK!" when they only know about 1 punk band, and everything else they like is poppy shit.
and even though a lot of REAL punx are big ramones fans, by prolonging the ramones influence on the punk scene, the perpetuate the myth that punk bands sound like sped up rockandroll,(i'm looking at YOU, Casualties!) thus helping people confuse bands like Sum 41, All American Rejects, etc, with punk.
Fawkes
25th October 2007, 02:37
The Ramones were one of the first bands to simultaneously speed up traditional rock and roll while simplifying it, thus laying the groundwork for punk rock to come. To be honest, I'm not that big of a Ramones fan as I find them too poppy for my taste.

Nah the problem with that line of crust is it's extreme conservatism, everything stays the same.
And the fans at least from my experience here in Denmark seems to be the same and many musicians in the scene is crap. I think it's why the more talented moved on other directions, like some of the guys from Carcass and Napalm Death. Boring to stay the same all the time

Yeah it is quite hardcore listening to it, I still enjoy it sometimes but listen mostly to other styles. i happen to enjoy having my ears brutally attacked by shit. grind and crust are probably the most extreme form of punk, and they are decidedly not for everyone. when i first heard crustpunk (i beleive it was aus rotten "the system works for them" or nausea's "fallout") i was initially shell shocked by it's agressiveness (which is saying something, seeing as at the time my favorite band was Minor Threat, not exactly mellow.) but i grew into it....

I really evolved through punk in the past few years.
I went from strictly punk, along with bands like Sabbath. Then I moved onto straight 80's hardcore from all 'round. Then I got into crust, then grindcore and power violence. Then recently into sludge and doom metal.
Basically all the extreme shoot off's of punk, and then the extreme shoot off's of those off shoots.

The late 70's through to 80's anarcho scene was fucking great, and alot of those bands are still amazing today....
Anyone who likes punk should check out The Restarts, they are absolutely brilliant... great message, great sound, great blokes...

I see the posts I made in this was when I first dabbled in punk.
Now my favorite (post- and/or proto-)punk bands are:
Sex Pistols, PiL, The Pop Group, Devo, Iggy Pop, Pere Ubu, Patti Smith, James Chance, The Residents, Alternative TV, Captain Beefheart and Cabaret Voltaire.

The Clash are the best.
I like different "types" of punk.
Like noise punk: Confuse, Sieg Hail (not nazi band), Chaos Destroy, The Wankys, The Swankys, G.A.I.
Or metallic punx: Death Side, Poison Arts, Amebix
Raw hardcore: 80s Finland, Sweden, Italy and Yugoslavia
77 style punk
D-beat: Disclose, Äppäratus, Zudas Krust etc
I don't like 80s USA and I dont like anarcho punk (it's to liberal to listen) nor crusties (their music smells like them).

What's the difference between D-beat and crust? It sounds the same to me.

The Clash pwn
Used to like SLF, their current line-up has a reactionary **** in Ian McCallum. Jake Burns has had to apologise for this ****s antics before.
Early Joy Division/Warsaw are class too.

Punk is the greatest music EVER, it saved my life... only thing is its not a threat any more, and we would of got away with it if it wasnt for those pesky capitalists......
but punks not dead, no matter what may people want to say, punk spirit will never die because it's always been there, the hippies had punk spirit, it just took about 15years for it to come out in an extreme way and someone to call it 'punk'...... Punk isnt just a word with a dictionary meaning, its much more then that, its about individuality and liberation, aswell as much more that if you can just mock it then you dont understand it. i dont no if i was just suppose to give a generic list of bands like everyone else, im just giving punk some appreciation......
But if you want a list then my fave bands at the moment have to be The Restarts, Eastfield, Contempt, ICH, The Usual Suspects, Drongos For Europe, Sonic Boom Six, The Nags, Rejected, Poundaflesh and Certified. I recomend you should check them all out.

D-beat is the way of drumming and not all crust bands have d-beat. Crust is more like mixture of metal and punk, and it's very confusing genre to me. I don't like the most of "crust" band and I hate "anarcho" punk thing in crust. It's to idiotic :)

I hereby assert the superiority of Oi! to all other forms of punk, followed closely by hardcore and crust.
