For those art nerds on the board, if they exist, what is your opinion on modern v post-modern art.

In terms of history I'm personally a modernist when it comes to the vast majority of art forms/theories. Post-modernism seems to be characterised with a total lack of radicalisation and seems dominated by middle-class narratives and themes.

In terms of the actual art itself I enjoy deconstructive art but not as passion. I appreciate it's position within the progression of the way people make art and the accessibility it provides but it's total lack of determination of thought makes me lose interest.

I couldn't say what my favourite modern art period was, but I really like neo-expressionist Jackson Pollack paintings, social realism and Dadaism.

I agree with you on the exact terms of what they call post-modernism. Why i enjoy its generally subversive attitude, it seems to be all sound and fury, signifying nothing. Not to mention it is usually created by California petty-bourgeoisie liberals who wear all black, dye their hair and smoke cigarettes.

The fact is that I find modernist art, particularly authors (I'm a writer, I know this shit) to be far purer and focused than those in the postmodern art circuit. In my mind, James Joyce will always be superior to Andy Warhol. I hold not hostility for these people--it's simply that I feel they lack direction.

That said, I believe these days are careening toward a more radical direction. Something that has evolved from the fluff of postmodernism is emerging--an age of darker intellectual entertainment. I await with baited breath.

it's [post-modern art]..lack direction.
I think this would be argued is not a problem. That lacking direction is a statement unto itself.
