An Australian Federal Police spokesman said that an argument with a police officer about where the taxi was allowed to stand led to "a violent ... wrestle and [the driver] had to be subdued".
The officer asked the 39-year-old driver to move the taxi about 7.15am because he was blocking an exit road, the spokesman said.
An argument ensued, after which the taxi started moving and the officer banged his hand on the car, he said.
"That led to the driver getting out of the vehicle and a further verbal argument took place," he said.
The driver refused to show the officer his licence and was subdued with capsicum spray after the altercation became violent, the spokesman said.
Papers report 50-100 cab drivers (though the media are known to play down numbers) then staged a brief wild-cat strike in response.
The driver in question has been charged with resisting a police officer in the course of duty, and failing to comply with directions and to produce a licence.
AAP reports that Taxi Drivers Association president Michael Jools said "We are moving into action mode as we speak and we intend to have a blockade at the airport"
