Well, I won't say that there's anything that's "required reading", but some pretty good ones include Robert Alexander's two-volume history "The Anarchists in the Spanish Civil War" which is quite comprehensive, as is Burnett Bolloten's "The Spanish Civil War: Revolution and Counter-Revolution", and there's also Broue and Temime's "The Revolution and Civil War in Spain". Franz Borkenau's diaries in "The Spanish Cockpit" are pretty good as a primary source. Probably the best book I've read about it is "The Blood of Spain" by Ronald Fraser, which contains numerous interviews of people who participated in the conflict.

You can probably find most of those at the nearest university library.

I recently finished a book by Antony Beevor entitled "The Battle For Spain". Its a medium-sized book (about 400 pages) and its mainly unbiased, although I detected a slightly pro-Republican sympathy in the book.

Recently I read "The Spanish Civil War: Reaction, Revolution, and Revenge" by Paul Preston. I thought it was very good, and it had good criticisms of all sides and anti-fascist factions. There are tons of books about the Spanish Civil War, so you shouldn't have too much trouble finding a good one.

After the Revolution by Diego Abad de Santillan is an excellent read.

I also enjoy http://www.amazon.com/Durruti-Spanish-Revo...z/dp/190485950X (http://www.amazon.com/Durruti-Spanish-Revolution-Abel-Paz/dp/190485950X)

Although there are many books.

There isn't really an adequate overall account. But I'd recommend "Anarchists in the Spanish Revolution" by Jose Peirats, "The Spanish Collectives" by Gaston Leval, and Abel Paz's biography of Durruti. Robert Alexander's 2-volume book has various mistakes but does contain a translation of part of the CNT's "libertarian communist" program.

The Spanish Anarchists by Murray Bookchin is pretty good. Apparently, from the Introduction, Bookchin had to do some deep archival research because no other book before his delve deep into what the anarchists did. Others it seems only touched lightly on them or had incomplete information.

The Spanish Labyrinth, by Gerald Brenan, is quite interesting. It is about the history of the various ideologies involved in the SCW, like the Falangists, Carlists, Anarchists etc..
