I see CCTV (closed-circuit television) cameras everywhere I go. Banks, airports, on the street, even in my school. Obviously, CCTV usage has gone farther then security purposes and are being used as a means of social control.

So how do we take care of them? How can we dismantle, spraypaint, or jam them without getting caught? I put special emphasis on the last part of the last sentence.

Big Brother is everywhere, so how do we get rid of him?

High-powered CO2 pellet gun.

Long pole with a hook on the end, or a spraying attachment.

Slingshots.

I would hang on and get ready to coordinate strikes against the new talking CCTV, rather than the current ones (see my trhead in politics about them) Hypothetically speaking, of course.

I would never suggest vandalism against council property, but I've heard of people taking them out by throwing a rope or chain around them, and pulling them off, or standing on bins or getting folding stepladders and spraypainting over them.

Just cover yourself up when destroying a camera so they wont recognize you or destroy when the camera is looking away from you so you are not in view.

I have seen cameras mounted here and there outside as well. I don't really see the point in destroying them, though, as they will just end up replacing the ones you bust up and beefing up security where they get destroyed the most often. I would use some kind of mask if I were going to take one out (perhaps spray it with spraypaint or make it all blurry by coating it with some kind of clear coating or wax), but I do not advocate that.

I hate surveillance cameras, and I too would really like to know how to get rid of them. They're in my school. Too bad I don't know where exactly they are found because they're hidden.

Chain loop around seems to be an awesome idea; also remember that damaging the mount, cabling or other vital things around the camera make them harder to replace. Cut cables cannot be soldered back on, they'll need refitting, also damaged mounts will require remounting, drilling, generally work and money.

If you crack a single camera, the lens or the unit itself, it can be replaced rather quickly and without much hassle. Ripping a bastard clean off its mount will cause damage that can take a lot of money and time to repair.

Just make sure you remember that the camera will record your last actions before it expires, so don't be a fool and think just because the camera is RIP that the images will go down with it. But everyones already stated that.

I do not advocate the destruction of CCTV cameras nor private property... <_<

Surveillance cameras really are a double-edge sword. We have them outside our school, and as much as I hate the way they peer into everyone's 'private' life, I would be so thankful for them if they were to spot somebody coming to the school with the intent of harming students.

I have heard that slapping a magnet on the side of one scrambles it. It needs to be an earth magnet from an old computer (pre 1998).

I have heard of people shooting paint balls at the lens.

or using a laser... http://www.naimark.net/projects/zap/howto.html

That would work on some of the lower end ones, but the ones employed in big cities and on corprate buildings have a casing to prevent shock damage.

I fuckin hate surveillance cameras. The world today is just like Orwells "1984" come true.
Sometimes when im in stores, I saw someone cover up their face and steal whatever they can fit in my pockets right in front of the camera, just to piss em off

When im in stores where I dont shop very often that is. If not, they would recognize me sooner or later.

Edited for legal reasons. Remember security culture, friend.

or using a laser...

You'd have to have a pretty strong laser to cause any serious permanent damage to a camera. I work with class IIIb lasers, and I have seen the beam go directly into a camera lens and not damage the camera at all. Although it might fuck up some crappier cameras, high quality cameras will probably not get that damaged from a laser beam unless it's something like a surgical or cutting (class IV) laser.

That said, most lasers, when pointed directly into the lens of a camera will temporarily blind the camera. I think this is even true for laser pointers, although I've never experimented with it.

The most common type of camera where I live is the type hidden by those little black domes that make it hard to see where it's pointed at. I can't pull those down, and I don't know if a slingshot would be able to penetrate the dome. If you can reach them, I would recommend just spraying over them with paint or something else to blind them.

Most of the outdoor cameras I've seen are the big clunky sort, but those look like they have some sort of armor that would make it impossible to disable with a projectile unless you had a firearm or shot something straight into the lens.

And if you don't have time to dismantle the camera itself, you could just snip the wires, if you can get to them.

Vandalism is bad and I don't advocate it at all. That would be silly.

Lasers? Seems too complex; I heard of some people using thermite caps to melt cameras, but that also seems like quite the effort and you'd have to be ultra determined to do it, not to mention thermite being a dangerous substance to mess around with.

I suppose if you're REALLY DESPERATE, you could use an EMP... but that would be extremely time-consuming, possibly expensive, and impractical considering you would also disable phones, computers, and all other security devices, which would be "bad"...
