Leftist are in favor or changes, sometimes radical, to the government, while rightists want things to stay the same.

No, progressives want change, and conservatives want to stay the same.

Leftists are in favor of economic and political systems of equality. Where as rightists are in favor of economic and political systems of equity.

That is the easiest and most precise way to put it, without adding in unneeded emotional claims.

The words "leftist" and "rightist" are used by different people to mean various different things. There is no single definition of "leftist" and "rightist" that everyone in the world could agree on.

Therefore, you are looking for something that doesn't exist. You can ask someone what they define as "left" or "right" in order to understand what they are talking about when using those terms, but you must be aware that when you start talking to another person you may have to ask the same question again, since they may be using different definitions.

Having said that, we here at RevLeft tend to define a "leftist" as a person who believes in the revolutionary overthrow of social systems based on hierarchy or private property, and who wishes to establish egalitarian societies in their place. A "rightist" is defined as a person who upholds hierarchy or private property. In brief, leftism = equality; rightism = inequality.

"Left" and "right" come from, I believe, a system installed by a King of France to manage his kingdom. To the left of his thrown, was a council made up of common people whos interests lay with the common people, to the right wing was made up of people with bussniess and management interests.

When someone calls you a lefty, they probably mean you have expressed political sentiments that favour the interests of the common people in society (these days, the working class) Now that could range from anything like a liberal 1% tax decrease for households that earn under 13k a year. Or it could mean you favour the revolutionary overthrow of capitalism in favour of communism. So it's a broad term, sometimes even relative, but it has meaning.

The reason I say it's relative, is that Leninism for example, is to the right of what I believe. So I could, I suppose, call it right wing. But in the political world it is considered a far left political ideology.

This is a very simplistic model, to give you a basic idea

Far-Left: Economic equality; revolutionary; single proletarian and farmer class; internationalist; gender equality; anti-racist; multi-cultural; zero poverty; extremely democratic

Left: Wealth redistribution; reformist; smaller capitalist class; internationalist, pro-gender equality; anti-racist; multi-cultural; bourgeois parliamentary

Centre-Left: Pro-capitalist; means-tested benefits; socially liberal; bourgeois-directed; bourgeois parliamentary

Centre: Very pro-capitalist; advancing private sector over the public sector; moderately socially liberal; run by bourgeois and plutocratic élites; tax-cuts for the wealthy

Centre-right: Very pro-capitalist; favours tax cuts for the wealthy; stands for reactionary traditions; socially conservative; pro-religion; anti-socialist

Right: Very pro-capitalist; demands cuts in social services for more tax cuts for wealthy; racist; nationalist; misogynist; stridently anti-worker; prefers anti-democratic traditions; authoritarian conservative outlook on society; pro-religion

Far-Right: Subordinates classes and the economy to the cult of the leader, and the glorification of race and the nation; extremely racist and nationalist; deeply misogynist; fetish of the military

The political spectrum is much more complicated than this, but it's a broad starting point.

I agree with that diagram. Personally, I've been everything from centre to far-left :P

Bullshit.

Just because people don't understand the attributes of the political terms "right" and "left", doesn't mean they don't exist.

There are very definite functions of the terms. That is why they are still used internationally. Simply because the United States bourgeois media doesn't use them correctly, does not mean that a correct usage doesn't exist.
