Socialism is the system between capitalism and communism, a transitional stage, in where things morph from the private hands of capitalists - through the state - into the hands of the working class.
Communism is a system in where state or authority no longer exist in the form we know of, a place in where people have full control over their lives (and thus their work). The authority that is, is one which everybody has agreed on (or, in other words, "goals"). Almost all things concerning the community will be democratic. In other words, it is utopia.

Socialism is the system between capitalism and communism ...
That is in the theory published by Lenin in 1905. There is no such distinction anywhere in Marx or Engels.

What are you talking about? Marx and Engels are the one's who came up with the theory of the transition phase which Marx called the first phase of communist society. Lenin drew his ideas on the state and the transition phase directly from Marx and Engels.

My understanding is that communism is an advanced form of socialism, whenever the institutions invented under capitalism, such as capital and currency become obsolete and can be dispensed with entirely.

Socialism is like what we have now without the poverty and most of the capital, but once communism (or anarchism) as been reached there is total liberation from the capital.
