Rereading this thread I was about to say the same thing. The reason why leftists have historically been at odds with poor, rural whites ("rednecks," "hillbillies," etc) is that the latter groups are perceived to be politically and socially backwards. I see no reason for this type of demeaning bigotry and see it as fundamentally contradictory to the struggle, particularly when they share our views on a relevant political issue.
