In Britain especially. Or is this just an anarchist thing?

Nah, virtually all socialist parties support it. Respect, the SSP, Solidarity and so forth all support it.
To be honest I don't think you can seriously call yourself a leftist if you don't support it.

Right wingers from the tories and BNP have tried to infiltrate the unions through democratic means in the past which is quite ironic.

This is an important point, because you have to look at what people say and what they do.
The Bolsheviks came out against workplace democracy in the end, in the name of increased production. Trotsky was a big proponent of the militrisation of labour.
Some levels of the govt n Venesuela have also come out on the side of owners/managers vs workers who have occupied lants.
Not all poeple who call themselves leftist support real workplace democracy.
If people support this they should argue why, its an important quetsion for the direction of a revolution.
I think this is a central debate that should be had and is often brushed over.
