Autonomous Regions

The idea of a certain people governing themselves, is that compatible with left thinking?
For instance, the Basques, Mayans, peoples like that, living in a country that controls their historically owned land, their fights for freedom and their own states, are they something the common commie would accept? Should cultural areas form boundaries? Fighting for independence from an overbearing nation makes sense, but to do so and set up a nation based on the area of a specific culture, does that work out? Now, lets say, hypothetically, Spain is a lefty country, would the Basques and the Catalans have their regions set up on cultural lines? And should regions of an overall communist/socialist government have some of their own powers? While of course holding standard ideologies of the whole community, would these areas (assuming they exist) have some degree of power over their own area? The thinking here being 'what is right for you is not necessarily right for me,' and that some, if minor, self-determination is allowed to specific regions within our ideal state (or lack thereof).

The Communes in the Basque regions, as an example, would be autonomous; as is any of the other communes.
Since the communes and it's neighborhood assemblies hold all the power from the bottom-up than basically they are quite free from the authority of a foreign central government, which is the case now (I suppose): the Basque region is under the Spanish central government.

So would a region that is is more-or-less autonomous be based on population, culture, language, etc, or what? Providing this is how the 'nation' is being run.

Not exactly...

Think of there being an autonomous commune for every Spanish city...and these cities have the right to (con)federate however they wish. The Basque would probably form a confederation of Basque communes centered around Vitoria-Gasteiz or Pamplona/Iru~a...but they have the ability to choose and reject who they want to (con)federate with. The small Basque (con)federation can choose to join into a bigger Spanish (con)federation, and this (con)federation process can continue until probably you have something like an Anarchist EU (Note: Bakunin talked of something like the EU) .

Since a leftist revolution usually aims to do away the importance of nationalism, it's likely that (con)federations would probably form more on practical lines than nationalist,etc ones.
