At least 15 people have been injured in running battles between youths and police in the northern German city of Hamburg, officials say.
The clashes began when a large group of suspected left-wing radicals set fire to rubbish bins after an annual street festival on Saturday night.

The police said water cannon and batons had been used to disperse the rioters. Thirty-eight people were detained.
The Shanzenviertel festival attracts thousands of people every year.

The clashes lasted for several hours, after the rioters erected street barricades and set ablaze rubbish bins.

At one point a four-metre-high (13-ft) fire was burning in the city, police spokeswoman Karina Sadowsky was quoted as saying by the AFP news agency.

"It is all over now," she said, adding that eight of the injured were police officers. :D

Officials said at least 5,000 people attended this year's festival.

It's quite normal for german punks to fight with the police, a part time occupation one might say...

They don't seem like just some "punks". The article mentioned "racial leftist".

but of course, I'm not too sure because I dont have enough information. So if someone does, please post it.

Well "autonomen" would properly be a more accurate description, it's still more of a subculture than anything else in my oppinion though, "lifestylism" one could call it. A bit of modern day punks mixing in things like veganism and so on, if im correct about the people involved of course, it just seems as what I've witnessed a thousand times before in Germany.

And the point being?
Riots for the sake of riots?
Actually I wouldnt even call it riots, 15 arrested is not a big thing.
If you want that kinda action I think you should find the nearest "ghetto", hey even just go to a sportsmatch, there's bound to be some action once in a while.

Of course there's no political perspective at all, but I don't take it that was the point.

I dont think anyone should be expecting some miraculously flawless Marxist uprising with informed superhumans.

But I strongly disagree with the way you dismissed frequent, large riots among disgruntled youths. All revolutions have to start somewhere.

Indeed, which is why we should stop cheerleading just anyone who throws a couple of stones.
Big riots like Watts are something totally different from a small group of "autonomen" fighting some cops.

Edit: It seems like "drunken riots" too mee after browsing a bit. Here's a link, not much new in it though
