Britain is preparing territorial claims on tens of thousands of square miles of the Atlantic Ocean floor around the Falklands, Ascension Island and Rockall in the hope of annexing potentially lucrative gas, mineral and oil fields, the Guardian has learned.

The UK claims, to be lodged at the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf, exploit a novel legal approach that is transforming the international politics of underwater prospecting.

Following on from Russia's attempt to claim the North Pole, the UK is now trying to take control of the potential resources under the South Atlantic Ocean.

With Chavez, Kirchner, Correa, and Morales all holding power in the area with massive popular support, I don't know how the UK is going to pull this game off...Even wimps like Bachelet, Vazquez, and Ortega will insist that the UK keep its hands off Latin America's resources.

Though it is not nice Britain doing this the fact is who in south America is going to stand up to them? Venezuala is too far north and in the Caribbean and Peru is on the west side of the continent not the east. So the only country that can lodge any sort of complaint because it is near their territory is Argentina. But seeing how Britain and Argentina had a war not so long ago with the result being Argentina's military Fascist junta being overthrown as a result of that war i do not think the Argentines will bother lodging any sort of complaint (They might grumble like most politicians do) which is a shame.
