In the past, Food Not bombs has used various means to get food.
The two main ones are donations and dumpster diving.

Why would you retrieve food to give to homeless through dumpster diving?

I don't totally know what you mean.

Let me show you what you can find in a dumpster...

I can assure it's fine. Obviously somethings you find in a dumpster will not be edible... those things get left behind.

Thats okay, you don't have to use it, it's just a very good means of doing so.
The other way is getting donations, most places - such as supermarkets, bakeries (especially bakeries), etc. will all have food they'll be willing to give away.

But seriously, dumpster diving, as BGM said, is perfectly fine. That nasty stuff you just leave behind.
Cuz there's plenty of good stuff in there. :)
