I hear people are talking about making some kinda leftist response to YouTube. I think this is a great idea, so i decided to make a seperate thread about it.
What do you think about this?

Some of the names that have been put forward is "RedTube", "CheTube", "UsTube" and "RevTube".

I think you need to take the idea to other leftist websites such as libcom etc so that members from each forum can all contribute. That way, we're not just relying on possibly no more than 500 active members, but potentially thousands.

It would be a pretty hard undertaking.

First you need to find a code munkee to write the engine for the site, and he's gotta be good otherwise you'll spend all your time cleaning up after hackers.

Second you'll need to work out if you want to go co-loc or just rent. Co-loc means buying your own hardware then just buying your bandwidth, bigger initial out lay and occasional upgrades to be done, but total control over server. Plain renting webspace is initially cheaper but long term more expensive and you are far more under the thumb of your host.

Third you gotta find your host, that can be fun. You need to fiund one thats cheapish but also reliable, good luck on that.

windows movie maker is such a buggy and annoying program. I did have a excellent prop video but it crashed last second so I lost it all. BAH.

Listen, do people really want to do this? There is free, open-source software available to make a community site that videos can be posted in. But it will take seriousness on the part of comrades, some dedication, and some minimum finances (for hosting).

If comrades want to move forward here, there's a lot of work to be done. I don't think starting out with a logo is the best idea.

Why do you need to watch videos of others beating up fascists? It seems absurd to me. Why not, instead of staying in and watching other dedicated activists battle it out, you go, and organize a local ARA (or AFA) and start doing the work you are watching about. If you have not seen any flyers or handbills for either, why not get a group of friends together that all agree with the ARA points of unity, and start to organize. It just so happens that millions of working people utilize the internet as a form of communication and entertainment .. would you reject communists using television, publications, door-to-door canvassing, etc.? Would you have told Woody Guthrie to stop singing? If not, then why would you rule out using the internet as one medium of work? It would be like communists years ago rejecting using printing presses in favor of 'organizing in the real world.'

I'm all for "RevTube," but I think it should have, at the very least, a little variety. It would be nice, for instance, to have, say, a leftist comedy. Like a film or series that shows the everyday lives of a few people living in a communist society. As long as it's not just an in-your-face-propaganda (those are pretty annoying, actually) it would be informational and entertaining and possibly even attractive to the mainstream and moderate crowds. Almost every working class person I know watches two genres almost exclusively: comedy and horror. I've never heard anyone say, "Hey, let's go watch that new propaganda film put out by (insert political organization)." Nah... don't fool yourself... it never happens.

Just my two cents. I'm all for something like this, but I can see a lot of things that worry me.

I think you can get a free 30 day trial of Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 at the main adobe website. Just google it and look around. I used it before and it's a pretty good program, although right now I'm using the elements version, which is still way better than Movie Maker.

Also, failing that, there is always liveleak... It used to be ogrish, and considering the content, I doubt they mind anything that is not explicitely illegal.

EDIT: The spelling error can actually open some interesting opportunities for logo design, and would be a really common spelling error anyway.

Yeah I should have realized that someone most likely figured it out... but my point is, even if you make redtube.net or .org, you will not have a reputable site. How many times have you heard a website on the radio, seen it written on a wall, or had someone tell you about it, and go to it, while inadvertently typing in the wrong domain name? and when someone accidentally types in redtube.com and sees milfhunters instead of antifa vids, that person may or may not be turned off the site. I remember hearing ideas like revtube and such, and personally i think that a site not affiliated with some shitty porno site will have much more reputability.

Thats why when we get our own site up and running it will be known as leftube.com.

We have already pointed out that redtube2007 is just a temporary account we have on youtube to get our message across.

When leftube is up and running we will be able to have all the videos that are banned by youtube and show them without the threat of banning our account as we will run the site ourselves.

BTW: Maybe somebody already brought this up, but "Redtube" is also the name of a porno youtube, so you might consider renaming this, although I principally like the name.

Well the only other names that we have thought of are "Revtube" (In honour of where the idea for a leftist youtube started, revleft) or "Leftube" (To encompass all of our various leftist beliefs from Anarchist to Communist etc).

We've been holding a Radical Film Night in our area for a while now, and I've been thinking of putting together an online collection of different (especially anarchist) films for a while now. I have a number of films that I can put up online, but my only problem is avoiding copyright issues, and I've already upset one film director...

I don't see the need for this. We should be promoting our ideas on YouTube. I do agree that if it was done, really done as its own website, RedTube would be one of the last choices, because it would be confused with the porn site, so RevTube is better.

but they do ban leftist videos while leaving the fash ones up, which was the whole point of a leftist youtube in the first place.

A number of antifa vids got removed but there was no equivalent removal of fash vids.

That would be a phenomenal rape of bandwidth for the site. Theres nothing wrong with using youtube in my opinion, its video system is far more robust than anything you or I could slap together. In short, pointless.

Then there are other sites such as blip.tv and video.google.com, where anyone can upload big and long movies and clips. revmedia.net had some of their material aviable for download on archive.org, and uploaded on Google for anyone to see. Too bad they are no longer active.
