Idont know if you know who they are but they have been protesting the war at soldiers funerals. I do not support the war in any way but I have nothig against the soldiers. One thing I found odd is how Phelps strongly supported Al Gore and such (his son Fred Phelps Jr. was even a delegate in the 1988 Democratic primaries) yet suddenly in like 1996 or so Al Gore said he supported gay rights and OH NO AL GORE IS EVIL and they picketed at Al Gore Sr.'s funeral when he died a few years later.

So yes, they really, really care too much about homosexuality.

They are good in a way because they show homophobia up for what it is. One could argue that they are extremists and other homophobes are different and so forth, but at the end of the day all homophobia is equally absurd, and Fred and co illustrate it far better than most.

Of course there is the negative side. Their spiteful gloating over the recently deceased and their picketing of funerals is horrible and if the stories are true, what Phelps has done to his family is unforgivable, so we can't quite right them off as an amusement. However they are excellent for combating homophobia, though that certainly isn't their intention.

They will make no effort to do so. Have you seen these people on TV ? When confronted by someone who wants to speak to them rationally, they stick their fingers in their ears (literally), and chant their mantra: "God hates fags".

I would suggest that no one even mention or aknowledge these people. As Michael Jackson and Brittany Spears have proven, there really is no such thing as bad press. Any press at all is recognition, and if you're paying attention to them, then they have accomplished what they set out to do.

I think that they are aware that the people consider them ghouls and hate-mongering oddities; they don't care. They don't care if Michael Moore and TV news crews patronize and ridicule them on TV, so long as they get on TV. So long as they get even a few precious minutes of airtime for their message to be heard, they can spread it to homophobes nation-wide.

By even taking a moment out of your day to spit on them, you're turning them into martyrs and homophobe folk heroes.


On a more bizzare note, apparently phelps is pro-Castro, because of what he percieves as oppression of homosexuals in Cuba. While their reasons are erroneous, the WBC are to some level anti-USA, pro-Cuba;no wonder their fellow Southern baptist lunatics shun them.

But I'm sure these freaks will appeal it. Given the overwhelming deference given to religious groups in the self-proclaimed "judiciary" of the U$, this is going to be a long battle. It is tantamount to suppressing private religious expression, which is viciously protected by the courts, and I am currently skeptical the judgment will be upheld on appeal.

Apparently he now believes that they should be treated like everyone else. I do know that until recently he was against homosexuality though. He's probably the "neutral" type though. (against it personally as something that "isn't right", but willing to let it slide)
