What is the meaning of the "monroe doctrine"? and how does it affect Latin America directly?

does it mean the USA own Latin America as a treaty of the past?

The United States planned to stay neutral in wars between European powers and their colonies. However, if these latter types of wars were to occur in the Americas, the United States would view such action as hostile. President James Monroe first stated the doctrine during his seventh annual State of the Union Address to Congress, a defining moment in the foreign policy of the United States.[/b]

The Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine was a substantial alteration (called an "amendment") of the Monroe Doctrine by U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt in 1904. Roosevelt's extension of the Monroe Doctrine asserted the right of the United States to intervene to stabilize the economic affairs of small nations in the Caribbean and Central America if they were unable to pay their international debts. The alternative was intervention by European powers, especially Britain and Germany, which loaned money to the countries that did not repay. The catalyst of the new policy was Germany's aggressiveness in the Venezuela affair of 1902-03.(Marks 1979) The intervention took the form of takeover of the customs collection, and disbursement of the funds to the debtors and claimants. The policy was unpopular abroad (Ricard 2006).

It obviously impacted Latin America during the times of civil war and the cold war by deposing of popular leaders chosen by those very same countries in favour of puppet dictatorships supported by the US. Still is in affect today I suppose.

Keep Brittish, Spanish and French imperialism out! Leave it to American imperialism!

The only reason why this doctrine was a succes is because the Brittish had the mightiest fleed and never intervened in Latin America. The Brittish were in favor of the revolutions going on in Latin America during the 1820's.

The Monroe Doctrine essentially consists of the United States declaring its intention to be the sole imperialist power in the Western hemisphere.

"All your American colonies are belong to us."
