i've been wondering lately how it would work? how could a nation without money buy resources to make their goods from other countries? through trade? i imagine it being almost impossible

Communism abolishes money in its own area(s).
They could trade...but why would capitalist countries want trade with a communist society? They'll probably stay hostile.
Although, we could use the gold, jewelry, etc and use it to attain a reserve of foreign money so to trade with foreign countries. There are also the old stockpiles of foriegn cash from the reserves of the defeated government. We could also use this stuff to support other reolutionaries.
Yet, I still don't think any capitalist nation would like to trade with a communist society even if they had the reserve money to do it.

1- Under communism there wouldnt be any 'countries', at least not in the capitalist sense, it would most likely be a global federal system.
2-Goods would be appropriated to workers in exchange for their labour. You do a days work, you collect your goods. Since everyone would have equal logistic means, over-indulgence of one individual or family would not be an issue.
That said, there would likely be an initial transition period from exchange of currency to a goods for labour system.

Money is just an expression of exchange value (which isn't possible with private property). Get rid of exchange (and private property) and you no longer have any need for money.

Getting rid of the need for exchange would probably take some time, I'd think. Abolishing money probably -- almost certainly -- wouldn't be viable during the birth of socialism.
I've been liking what I've read on technocracy -- a movement towards making unwanted labor obsolete through collectivist action and replacing man-power with machines.

The only trade that would occur following the revolution would most likely take place with another socialist state rather than a capitalist system. Some sort of medium of exchange may be needed but it certainly doesn't require the use of a monetary system.
