I google the word "statistic" followed by a question such as "how many people are in poverty in canada" and it strings together something.

Go to wikipedia articles about the topic and then look at the sources listed and visit those links.

Every western countrie has some sort of a national statistics agency and a website.

Most country's don't include negative statistics about themselves. I would go with a more neutral source.

CIA World Factbook is a good source of statistics as far as I know.

Perhaps I'm crazy, but I don't trust Governments or State Agencies like the CIA for my information.

This (http://www.ccsd.ca/facts.html), by the way, is a statistic page on poverty in Canada, if that was actually what you were looking for?

 It's not that you don't have good reason for what you're saying but I'd except they'd be quite honest about the statistics simple because they aren't producing such stuff for imposing bourgeois ideology on proletarians. They are rather providing the bourgeoisie with the official statistics about the situation in different places.
On Canada, for example, the source you provided and the CIA Factbook have used the same source (Low Income Cut-Off).
