I know this is an obvious answer for some.....but surely regarding events such as natural disasters, insurgencies and various 'state of emergency' type situations surely some form of military would be essential to keep things in order and redress the problem? also for the defence of the nation itself. By military I mean a proffessional full time military?

Would there be such thing as a democratically run force as such, or would it be organised on a more local level....as in some sort of local militia....using the term militia loosely.

Comments appreciated .....dont rip me apart! ;)

Yes, there must be a certain type of force to -for example- defend ourselfs.

Here's one of the older threads in which we already discussed certain aspects of the army: Thread. (http://www.revleft.com/index.php?showtopic=65272&hl=army)

There are many more old threads you can search for. But I think we have never discussed on this in detail.

Marxist's military writings. (http://www.marxists.org/subject/war/index.htm) In case you want to study on the subject.

I think the creation of a certain type of army depends on the situation. I find it important we have professional army. Specially today. The reason why is the constant modernisation of the army. In the 19th and early 20th century the army's technology consisted of rifles and canons. Today we have rockets, tanks, mines, radars and etc.

seeing how there will be no money in a future anarchist/communist world it would have to be an all volunteer (no payment for their services) militia force. perhaps every self sufficient commune would have its own militia force.

Military and police forces under socialism would serve the people instead of the imperialists.

"To protect" would mean to protect the gains of the revolution and the interests of the masses of people instead of the private property of the bourgeoisie, "to serve" would mean to serve the people, instead of the imperial bourgeoisie.

The organization of a revolutionary army is a topic that has come up quite a bit:
Defense (http://www.revleft.com/index.php?showtopic=68538)
how should a revolutionary army be organized? (http://www.revleft.com/index.php?showtopic=66785)

In the event of a revolution, I think that the core of the revolutionary force would come from worker's militias that have risen up to challenge and rebel against the bourgeois. But due to the combat situation they would most likely be classified as a professional military force due to the amount of training and time spent at the battlefront. Following this period of emergency however, the need for defense and security could easily be satisfied by a volunteer militia force.
