(Before I begin, there should seriously be a Television forum.)
Do any RevLefters watch Anime? I fucking live on it. :D
My favorite anime is called Neon Genesis Evangelion. It's a Science-Fiction-ish type. It has a very intelligent story with twists that question life, existence, war, hate, love, and all other complex human social interaction that is so profoundly unusual. The anime screams the question, "Why?" I suggest you watch it if you ever get the chance. It came out in 1995 and ended with only 26 episodes, but all questions and plot twists were concluded, so it does have an ending. There is a boxset "Neon Genesis Evangelion, Platinum Complete". It has six discs, five with the episodes and one with directors' cuts of episodes 21-24. I borrowed it from my friend and watched the whole series in one night, I was hooked, hah.
Other great animes I have stolen/borrowed/watched on TV are InuYasha, Naruto, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Fullmetal Alchemist, One Piece, and many others. I also like vintage shit like AstroBoy and Gigantor.
I read lots of Manga and Graphic Novels too. My favorite Manga is by far Evangelion, again...lol. InuYasha has a great Manga as well.
Thoughts?

Jin-Roh - set in post wwII japan, communist rebels vs police state made into a love story...
Battle Royale - ok not anime but it is a manga and was made into a movie...high school graduate class sent off to an island to kill each other off coz the japanese govt wants to cut down on possible subversives...
Animatrix - some are good, some not so good...
Trigun - funny & cool
Never have really been an avid watcher, but I've casually come across these few and enjoy them.

Trigun is great, actually not one of my favorites though.
Jin-Roh sounds interesting because of it's political influence, which I have never seen in Anime. I might try and get my hands on something.
I've never heard of Battle Royale or Animatrix either, I suppose some research is in order.
Thanks for the info.

Use Google!
Anyway, as luck would have it, I'm just downloading and watching the original Mobile Suit: Gundam series. I finally found a site with fansubs, which is certainly more enjoyable than the dubbed series. Sadly, they haven't done the entire series yet.

Gundam is great, Evangelion is a cooler giant robot series though.

I seen Fist of the North Star, Paranoia, Jin-Roh, Ninja Scroll: The Series & the movie, Fighting Spirit (Hajime No Ippo), Dragon Ball Z/GT, Yu Yu Hakusho, some 3D pilot shit, Trigun, Hunter X Hunter, Akira, Street Fighter: The Series, Gungrave, Cowboy Bebop, some Pop singer tries to get killed by some ghost, Bleach, Inuyasha
I know theres more but thats what comes to mind.
But my favorite has to be...Hunter X Hunter & Yu Yu Hakusho so far.
The last anime I downloaded was Hajime No Ippo, its based on boxing.
Fist of the North Star pretty much resembles Bruce Lee..only in a fictional way.

Ninja Scroll. Lovely film that, unlike most Manga, is irredeemably braindead. Love it.
Battle Royale (like BFR said).

First of all: FUCK YEAH. EVANGELION!
Seriously, though... Besides the awesome action & fights and stuff, there was a lot of nice philosophy/psychology stuff to think about after you finish watching it.
Cowboy Bebop is another great series, although I've mentioned it on this forum before. All 3 soundtrack cds are worth buying, and I listen to 'Piano Black' all the time.
Akira is a classic mindfuck of a movie.
Ghost in The Shell and Ninja Scroll are both cool, but I haven't seen them as much as the above.
I kind of stopped watching anime during highschool because I didn't want to turn into a basement-dwelling nerd but OH GOD I CAN'T HELP IT DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU http://img249.imageshack.us/img249/7320/desugy4.jpg

Rozen Maiden, I believe. As for me, I haven't watched much anime, just Azumanga Daioh and that Haruhi one, which was a bit of a disappointment really. Anyone got any good suggestions to start off with?

Depends on what you're into. I think the stuff you've watched is more of the cutesy comedy kind of anime, which I guess you're not a huge fan of.
I'd say to start off, watch a couple episodes of Cowboy Bebop, which I think is pretty hard to not like. Basically, it's a sci-fi series about bounty hunters that's very influenced by jazz and retro American culture.
"Ballad of Fallen Angels", "Mushroom Hunting", and "Pierrot le Fou" are some of my favorites. They probably have scenes from these on youtube, if you want a sample, first.
Evangelion, in my opinion, is a great anime, but it's a love-it-or-hate-it kind of thing. As mentioned above, it has awesome fights and interesting philosophical stuff, but the philosophy can get to be too much for some people. Also, the main character is a whiny, socially awkward 14 year old boy, and if you can't relate to that, it can get annoying.
Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Serial Experiments Lain, etc. are more of the mind-fuck type stuff from Evangelion. Akira, though, is a classic, and everybody should see it at least once.
And lastly, Osamu Tezuka pretty much created anime. He started the whole trend of big googly eyes. Check out his short "Jumping" from 1984...
Hope that helped, comrade!

Shinji wasn't very whiny, though socially awkward hits the nail right on the head.
The first anime, (this is a cool tidbit) was created in 1913 and was a 3 second feature of a sailboat sinking. Just thought that was a cool little fact.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions: though you misunderstood one of my points. I thought Azumanga was fantastic, I was just a little disappointed with the Haruhi anime.

i had a look for you to try and find the full movie but nothing came up, its a little tough to find cause they also made a series of several episodes.
:(
Anyways, this intro clip contains snippets of the best bits and gives you idea to the plot.
