Anything by Camus, Sartre, or Beauvoir. For American writers, I'd pick up Langston Hughes works, Wright's Native Son, and Herman Melville's Moby Dick.

In English, try:
Kurt Vonnegut's "Player Piano."
Philip Roth's "The Plot Against America."

Swastika Night, I forget by whom, but it's fantastic and very much like 1984 - written by a communist contemporary of George Orwell, from what I recall it's a Left Book Club publication. Type it into amazon - I doubt you'll be disappointed.
